How this Painting Came to Inspire a PlayInspired by the improvisational approach of jazz music, artist Romare Bearden started creating collages in 1964 that depicted African-American life in the rural South and Harlem. The painting you see here, “The Piano Lesson,” would later be the inspiration for August Wilson’s 1987 play by the same name.
